Generator inspection

Date:June 1, 2015, 6:07 a.m.

Yesterday was spent assessing the problem with the generator following the overheating incident. After removing the old cylinder head, the pre combustion chambers were both found to be cracked, hence the coolant being blown past the header tank pressure relief cap (the water jacket was seeing combustion pressure via these cracked chambers).
Well, the design of this cylinder head on this engine (Mitsubishi L2E) had the pre combustion chambers cast integral with the head, not replaceable like on some other engines. So, alas, this means, we will need a new cylinder head. The good folks at SMS Diesel spares in Sydney, have come through with a new cylinder head (the only one stocked in Japan!) and we should have it in country within 3 weeks, to collect from Sydney. They (SMS Diesel spares) also have a machine shop, so they will swap over my valves etc. to the new head, service the injectors and provide a gasket kit and then we will be good to go! In the meantime, we don't anticipate being in to many anchorages, so we will not have to rely on the Honda generator so much, though it's there if we need it (Glad we bought it along, what a life saver!).
Today's other maintenance included repairing an electrical fault with the main engines port alternator, a broken connection on a diode. So now, both alternators are back in action!
A new shower head and mounting bracket was also required to replace the one in the aft cabin, due to the shower head bracket being broken. Managed to source a nice looking unit from a local plumbing store for the princely sum of $60. The best part was I did not have to drill any holes, it fitted in exactly the same location! Bonus points, how often does that happen!

Cruising, the art of sailing to exotic destinations to carry out repairs and maintenance to the boat

Date:May 21, 2015, 9:42 a.m.

One cooked diesel generator - overheated to within an inch of it's life. I always knew this day would come, just not this early! Presently weighing up options, inevitable replacement (currently waiting on a quote from Germany for a like for like replacement) or a temporary repair to get it going again. At a minimum, this will be a new head gasket. I will not pull the head off until we get to Melbourne, so we will see the extent of the damage then. A cracked head will be a most distinct possibility, but, I live in hope!

Main engine - it looks like one of the two alternators has stopped charging, as there is a much reduced charge output. I now only get up to 30 amps charge output, whereas coupled with the adverc system, we used to get a minimum of 50-60 amps, depending on the state of the batteries. Bad timing considering the woes with the diesel generator. I will test the alternators tomorrow to find the culprit, but regardless, will get both of these serviced when in Melbourne.

Sheet winches - today was a winch servicing day, having done the port main sheet winch. Will do the starboard winch on the next quiet day

Scotty u will have to create your own little Rigmax Pm system for the Singita when u get back. I have enjoyed your logs mate , keep it up Big Dave June 21, 2015, 6:01 a.m.
