In the UNESCO Heritage-protected area of Pico even the obviously newer houses have to be constructed using the old style and methods. The construction from local volcanic rock is spectacular but must be extremely labor-intensive. Architects (Cat) tend to get very turned-on with the red-on-grey effect.
